He hated all the talk about music and the arts. He thought Schumann's rhapsodic reviews of Chopin's works were deeply embarrassing and wrong-headed. The interesting question is how come Chopin spent something like eight years of his short life with Sand clearly there must have been strong bonds of love between these, at first glance, rather incompatible people.Ĭhopin didn't like most of his contemporaries in music and the arts anyway. Usually Sand gets a bad rap, and clearly Z. Z.'s gives an intriguing reading of the Sand - Chopin relationship. He's also a scion of one the grand Polish families, and his familiarity with the territory, and his ability to read Polish and Russian, also help making this a beautiful book. Zamoyski doesn't do detailed musical analysis he's a historian. The 1979 Chopin biography is blessedly short, only 335 or so pages, and there are virtuallu every page offers some brilliant thought, insight or just some yummy facts.
